Upgrading to WordPress 2.6 and the white blank page

I just completed the upgrade of my blog to WordPress 2.6. It took more time that I had anticipated. However, the process was quite educational.

I have upgraded before using the WordPress Auto Updated plugin. After a few clicks, your blog is updated. It is so easy that it is hard to resist. I tried WPAU in order to get to WordPress 2.6, and the process was somewhat interrupted on the final stages. It was not clear what the problem was. The effect however was any access to any page of the blog would result to a blank page. No errors, no warnings whatsoever.

In terms of troubleshooting, it is really annoying not to have some sort of feedback. My visit to #wordpress at Freenode resulted in “oh dude, join the club”. Apparently, the blank page issue is common and it affects many users. I just noticed that Irene's blog gives a blank page as well; I wonder if she upgraded recently.

There are a few blog posts that debate on the blank page issue; use blogsearch.google.com to find the most fresh of them. The typical blog post on the blank page issue has a standard format with the author dumping a laundry list of things they tried first before mentioning at the end of the post in vague terms what they think the source of the problem is. I will spare of the long list as we are already at the fourth paragraph of the post.

What I believe was the problem is the theme. When you use WPAU, it does not disable the theme since you are upgrading from within the WordPress administration screen. Then, you end up with a new WordPress and a theme that crashes. If you are planning to try WPAU, it might be good to revert to a default theme first.

If you are reading this, then you probably messed up your blog already. You can change the theme using phpmyadmin, by altering the wp_options table. The option_names of interest are template, stylesheet and current_theme. Put default values here.

Overall it was quite educational to go through the details of installing WordPress, picking new theme, dumping old plugins and updating existing ones. What's needed now is a full backup and hope the blog works until WordPress 3.0.

Update on planet.ellak.gr

Planet EL/LAK (πλανήτης) is a blog aggregator of Greek-speaking users that work on free and open-source software. Though the users speak Greek, it is OK to write in English as well.

We started in 2004 at http://xnum.sourceforge.net/PlanetHellas/ and quickly realised we had to move somewhere else. We enjoyed hosting at hellug.gr and in February 2007 we moved to the current location, planet.ellak.gr.

In the free and open-source communities, the purpose of a planet is to provide a common location where one can read what the people behind the community are doing, thinking, and so on.

In planet.ellak.gr we use the venus variation of the Planet software. Quite shortly, venus will become the official Planet software.

The planet's feed is being managed by Feedburner. When you access http://planet.ellak.gr/rss20.xml, you get a normalised feed from Feedburner.

We use Google Coop as a means to search the websites and blogs that are shown here. At the top-right of the planet you can see the special search box. If you read something interesting on the planet at some point in time, you can search it through this search box.

Our latest stats for August show that 50% of our visitors use free and open-source software.

Mozilla Firefox has a 80% lead and is the most popular browser. IE is down at 11% and the rest is distributed to many open-source browsers and also accesses from mobile devices.

The vast majority of the visitors (84%) come directly here (either bookmark, or just typing planet.ellak.gr or they just disabled referrers). 8% comes from search engines and the last 8% come from friendly websites (top referrers include www.ellak.gr and BizWriter (Greek). Top keywords are greek, ubuntu and cyprus.

We maintain this planet in an open fashion; see the Planet-ELLAK Google Group, for past discussions, and information on getting your blog/community listed on planet.ellak.gr.

What’s wrong with health care systems?

It is generally quite easy to create a blog using one of those online services such as Blogspot. In fact many people create a blog and after a couple of posts they lose interest and neglect to update it. There is a blog I would like to draw your attention to, http://fakellaki.blogspot.com/. This blog was last updated on 3rd May 2007, one month ago. Quite sadly, it will not get updated again because the blogger has just passed away.
Amalia, the blogger, has been a victim of malpractice of the health service (both national and private) who failed her. At the age of 8 she was complaining that there was pain at her leg. The doctors failed to diagnose a case of schwannoma (a type of benign tumour). Seventeen years latter and after many visits, the tumour became malign and she developed cancer. A further five years of fight against cancer and she passed away in May 2007.
At the time of writing, her final blog post has over 1500 comments.
In the US there is no national healthcare system which leaves tens of millions of people without basic healthcare. For the rest, who have private healthcare, it appears there is a varying degree of satisfaction. Michael Moore, in his latest documentary Sicko, talks about the trend in the US private healthcare system to actively look for technicalities so that they do not cover the medical expenses.
What is wrong with the health care system? Is health care inherently expensive so that quality naturally drops? Are the examples depicted above the norm or are they just mere exceptions? What's the true cause of the problem?

Σπάσαν τα καλώδια

Την περασμένη εβδομάδα έγινε ένας ισχυρός σεισμός κοντά στην Ταϊβάν. Το επίκεντρο ήταν στη θάλασσα, κοντά στις νότιες ακτές του νησιού. Υπήρξε ένας αριθμός θυμάτων που ήταν σχετικά μικρός λόγω των αυστηρών πολεοδομικών κανονισμών της χώρας για ανθεκτικά κτίρια.
Ένα από τα θύματα ήταν τα καλώδια οπτικών ινών του συστήματος APCN 2 που συνδέουν την ΝΑ Ασία με τις ΗΠΑ και τον υπόλοιπο κόσμο. Έτσι, μέχρι την επισκευή των καλωδίων (~4 εβδομάδες) η σύνδεση με το Διαδίκτυο για τις χώρες της ΝΑ Ασίας είναι από αδύνατη μέχρι πολύ αργή.
Την επόμενη μέρα της καταστροφής το Google ήταν η μόνη υπηρεσία που κατάφερε να λειτουργήσει. Η εντολή traceroute έδειξε ότι τα πακέτα τερμάτιζαν στο Χονγκ Κονγκ οπότε το Google είχε προσπεράσει το πρόβλημα με τη Ταϊβάν με χρήση κάποιας άλλης γραμμής. Άλλες υπηρεσίες όπως Yahoo δεν ήταν προσπελάσιμες. Μπορούσες να συνδεθείς μόνο με δικτυακούς τόπους μέσα από στην NΑ Ασία.

Κοιτώντας το χάρτη με τη διασύνδεση των καλώδιων οπτικών ινών στην Ασία (PDF), διαπιστώνει κανείς ότι π.χ. είναι δυνατή η σύνδεση στην Αυστραλία από την ΝΑ Ασία. Πως μπορεί ένας χρήστης να συνδεθεί από ΝΑ Ασία με ΗΠΑ μέσω Αυστραλίας; Ένας εύκολος τρόπος είναι με τη ρύθμιση διαμεσολαβητή (proxy) που βρίσκεται στην Αυστραλία στο Firefox. Υπάρχει μεγάλη λίστα από anonymous proxy στο διαδίκτυο που μπορεί κάποιος να βρει εύκολα μέσω Google.

Στις τοπικές εφημερίδες διαβάζει κανείς άρθρα για τοπικούς ιστολόγους που η διαδικτυακή τους ζωή έχει ταραχθεί λόγω της αδυναμίας ιστολόγησης. Ελπίζω να διορθωθούν τα πράγματα σύντομα.

Μετάφραση του WordPress στα ελληνικά (νέο έργο!)

Ξεκίνησε μια νέα προσπάθεια για τη υποβοήθηση των μεταφράσεων του WordPress στις τοπικές γλώσσες, όπου διάφοροι χρήστες μπορούν να συνεισφέρουν μέσω του Διαδικτύου.

Η μετάφραση γίνεται με τη βοήθεια μιας εφαρμογής Web· χρειάζεται να αποκτήσετε λογαριασμό στο http://www.wordpress.com/ για να μπορέσετε να συνδεθείτε στο http://translate.wordpress.com/.

Η εφαρμογή του Web επιτρέπει να γίνονται προτάσεις για μια μετάφραση και έπειτα να καθορίζονται ποιες είναι οι αποδεκτές, κατά του τρόπου που το Google μεταφράζει μέσω της κοινότητας το δικτυακό του τόπο.
Το επίπεδο μετάφρασης του WordPress στα ελληνικά είναι γύρω στο 75% (960 από 1294 μηνύματα), και όπως φαίνεται έχει ληφθεί η μετάφραση που είχε γίνει στο Pootle και που μετά είχε σταλθεί upstream. Είναι σημαντικό να στέλνεις υλικό upstream .

Can you read Coptic?

Coptic is the most recent phase of ancient Egyptian. It is the direct descendant of the ancient language written in Egyptian hieroglyphic, hieratic, and demotic scripts. The Coptic alphabet is a slightly modified form of the Greek alphabet, with some letters (which vary from dialect to dialect) deriving from demotic. As a living language of daily conversation, Coptic flourished from ca. 200 to 1100. The last record of its being spoken was during the 17th century. Coptic survives today as the liturgical language of the Coptic Orthodox Church. Egyptian Arabic is the spoken and national language of Egypt today.

Coptic, as used today, has signs of influence from the Greek language. If you speak Greek, you should be able to recognise every entry in the screenshot (it comes from the dictionary that is available from http://copticlang.bizhat.com/).

There is a Coptic Unicode block and there are at least three Unicode fonts available with Coptic glyphs.

I am not aware of a keyboard definition to write Unicode Coptic; Coptic uses several combining diacritical marks (accents) and appears to surpass even Ancient Greek/Polytonic in this respect. An easy way to create (easy to write with?) method would be to start from the Greek keyboard layout and replace the codepoints with the Coptic ones. For the 9 combining diacritical marks, three keys should be dedicated, accessible through 1) pressing as is, 2) pressing with shift, 3) pressing with Alt. To avoid using dead keys, there would be a requirement to type first the letter and then the diacritical mark.

In modern Greek we use the ";:" key (on the right of L) to produce the acute and the diaeresis (with Shift) accents. The second suitable key could be the ' " key while the third the "/?" (debateable).

There are several efforts to convert non-Unicode fonts distributed by the Coptic Church. website. Moheb added the Coptic glyphs to the Freefonts. There is more work required to get them added by default to Linux distros. There is a discussion forum on Coptic.

Therefore, the most important task is to create a keyboard layout so that one can write in Unicode Coptic.

Then, existing (non-Unicode) text should be converted to Unicode Coptic so that there is material available. Moheb created support for this in iconv (glibc). There should be a bug report at http://sources.redhat.com/bugzilla/ under product glibc, component libc.

There exist free Unicode fonts already to have the text displayed. The conversion of the Coptic Church fonts to Unicode would be beneficial as well. To have them included in Linux distros, the distribution license should be set to one of the FLOSS licenses. An option could be to add to the DejaVu fonts (allowed by the license) so that there is a general purpose open font that is easy to work with.

I, for one, would love to write Greek using a Coptic keyboard layout and a Coptic Unicode font.

Update: Screenshot that demonstrates how well Unicode Coptic fonts behave when combining marks are used.

Update #2: You can test the above on your system by opening this OpenDocument file using OpenOffice.org or any other OpenDocument-compatible application. OpenOffice.org was verified that it can show combining marks. Your mileage may vary, your comments will be appreciated.

Σοβαρό πρόβλημα ασφάλειας στο WordPress 1.5.1.3 (τελευταία έκδοση)

Σε συνέχεια του προηγούμενου άρθρου, υπάρχει σοβαρότατο πρόβλημα ασφάλειας στο WordPress 1.5.1.3 (Strayhorn) και δεν αναμένεται να εκδοθεί διορθωμένη έκδοση στο άμεσο μέλλον.

Είναι σημαντικό το πρόβλημα; Ναι, πολύ, διότι υπάρχει εύκολα διαθέσιμο πρόγραμμα exploit που ο καθένας μπορεί εύκολα να εκτελέσει.

$ wp-exploit.pl http://www.victim.com/blog/ 'system(\"uname -a;id\");'

Εδώ γίνεται εκτέλεση των εντολών uname -a και id για να εμφανιστούν περισσότερες πληροφορίες από το σύστημα που υπάγεται το ιστολόγιό σας. Άλλες εντολές θα μπορούσαν να είναι rm -fr / κτλ.

Για να δείτε αν υπάρχει πρόβλημα στο ιστολόγιό σας, εκτελέστε το phpinfo() για να δείτε αν είναι ενεργοποιημένη η ρύθμιση

register_globals On On

Γενικά, η ρύθμιση register_globals είναι καλό να είναι ανενεργή. Όμως, αν το ιστολόγιό σας βρίσκεται σε σύστημα που δεν έχετε πρόσβαση για να κάνετε τέτοιες αλλαγές, ή δεν σας επιτρέπουν να έχετε αρχεία .htaccess, τότε έχετε σοβαρό πρόβλημα...

Βάλτε favicon στο ιστολόγιο σας (WordPress)

Τα ιστολόγια WordPress δεν φαίνεται να έχουν ένα εύκολο τρόπο για να προσθέτουν το λεγόμενο favicon, δηλαδή εκείνο το μικρό εικονίδιο που βλέπετε στο URL της τοποθεσίας στο Mozilla Firefox.

Δεν βρήκα πρόσθετη λειτουργία (plugin) για να κάνει την δουλειά αυτή, οπότε για να το κάνετε με το χέρι,

Βρείτε το αρχείο header.php που αντιστοιχεί στο θέμα (theme) που χρησιμοποιείτε. Αν δεν έχετε αλλάξει θέμα, το αρχείο είναι το /wp-content/themes/default/header.php
Κάπου στην αρχή πρέπει να αναφέρει κάτι σαν το
. Σε νέα γραμμή, από κάτω, προσθέστε
Δημιουργήστε το δικό σας favicon (εικόνα PNG, διαστάσεις 16x16, όσα χρώματα θέλετε, και με διαφάνεια αν θέλετε) και τοποθετήστε το στον υποκατάλογο images/ του θέματός σας, με όνομα myfavicon.png (ή οποιοδήποτε άλλο όνομα που να ταιριάζει με αυτό που βάλατε παραπάνω).
Αυτό ήταν! Φορτώστε ξανά την βασική σελίδα του ιστολογίου σας και θα δείτε το νέο favicon.

Φωναχτήρι; Τι είναι το φωναχτήρι;

Η μετάφραση του όρου έγινε εδώ, οπότε ξέρετε που να στοχεύσετε τα σχόλιά σας .

Το φωναχτήρι (κοινώς shoutbox) είναι ένα κουτάκι στην σελίδα σας όπου οι επισκέπτες μπορούν πολύ εύκολα να πουν κάτι σύντομο, όπως να αφήσουν ένα μήνυμα. Μα αυτό δεν κάνει και ο μηχανισμός των σχολίων; Ναι, το φωναχτήρι είναι ένα είδος σχολίων που φαίνεται ότι θα γίνει αρκετά εθιστικό...

Για να το δοκιμάσετε, δείτε το ιστολόγιό μου και συγκεκριμένα την πλευρική μπάρα (δεξία), κάτω από τον τίτλο Live Shoutbox. Χρησιμοποιώ το wordspew το οποίο βασίζεται στην τεχνολογία AJAX. Στα ελληνικά, αυτό σημαίνει, μεταξύ άλλων, ότι η ενημέρωση του shoutbox δεν απαιτεί την φόρτωση της σελίδας, με αποτέλεσμα να είναι πολύ εύχρηστο. Θα δείτε ότι χρειάζεται γύρω στο 1-2 δευτερόλεπτα για να εμφανιστεί το σχόλιο λόγω του όμορφου εφφέ...

Το wordspew έχει κάποια μικροπροβλήματα στην λειτουργία κάτω από Unicode που πιστεύω ότι θα διορθωθούν σύντομα.

Σελίδα υποστήριξης των ελληνόφωνων χρηστών WordPress.

Δεν γνωρίζω άλλο κεντρικό τόπο για την υποστήριξη χρήστων WordPress, οπότε πιστεύω ότι το wordpress.gr είναι ιδανικός τόπος για την δουλειά αυτή.

Picasa, Hello και Blogspot

Πρόσφατα δοκίμασα το Picasa και το Hello, που είναι προγράμματα του Google για την διαχείριση και διάθεση φωτογραφιών. Για τώρα είναι μόνο για Windows .

Με την χρήση των δύο μπορείς πολύ εύκολα να στείλεις μια φωτογραφία σου στο ιστολόγιό σου στο BlogSpot (και αυτό ανήκει στο Google), με αποτέλεσμα να μπορείς με φτηνό τρόπο να φιλοξενείς τις φωτογραφίες σου στο Διαδίκτυο. Με ένα μικρό πρόβλημα, πρέπει βλέπεις την σελίδα του ιστολογίου σου που περιλαμβάνει την εικόνα, για να μπορέσεις να δεις την εικόνα. Φυσικά αυτό το υλοποιούν με την χρήση του πεδίου referer της κεφαλίδας HTTP που στέλνεται όταν ο Firefox λαμβάνει τις εικόνες που απαρτίζουν μια ιστοσελίδα. Στο πεδίο referer μπαίνει το URL της ίδιας της σελίδας.

Στην υλοποίηση του BlogSpot έχουν την καλοσύνη να επιτρέπουν την πρόσβαση στις φωτογραφίες ακόμα και αν το πεδίο referer είναι κενό. Οπότε, αν ανοίξετε νέα στήλη (Ctrl-T) στο Firefox και γράψετε about:config στην περιοχή της τοποθεσίας, θα δείτε τις διαθέσιμες εσωτερικές ρυθμίσεις. Αν αναζήτησετε με φίλτρο referer, θα δείτε το κλειδί

network.http.sendRefererHeader = 2

Η τιμή 2 σημαίνει να συμπληρώνεται το πεδίο referer στη λήψη κάθε συστατικού της σελίδας, συμπεριλαμβανομένου και των εικόνων. Αν το αλλάξετε σε 1, δεν γίνεται αποστολή του πεδίου αυτού στις εικόνες, και μπορείτε να δείτε την παρακάτω εικόνα (φορτώστε τη σελίδα αυτή ξανά).

Η φωτογραφία είναι από ένα πάρκο με ενδιαφέροντα ζώα. Εδώ, γίνεται επίδειξη μιας σαύρας που ονομάζεται gecko. Υπήρχε η δυνατότητα στους επισκέπτες να πιάσουν το gecko, που όμως κανείς δεν δοκίμασε.
